Athlete of the Month

Meet our April Athlete of The Month—Josh Severns

JSS_1263.jpg

First off, Josh is extremely focused and dedicated to technique, making him a great overall Crossfitter. On top of that he has some of the best squat mechanics in the business! He is an exceptional competitive athlete, but also humble and down to earth. Not only is he a well-rounded competitor, but just an all around good dude! Josh is a role model in the gym as well as being a family man at home, we are fortunate to have him as a member of our fitfam!

-Tell us a little bit about you!

I am 38 years old, married to my wife Kinleigh for 8 years and have 2 beautiful daughters ( 3.5 and brand new).  I enjoy family time, traveling and of course crossfit.

-Occupation?

Retail Manager

-Tell us something we don’t know about you?

My birthday only comes around every 4th year.

-How long have you been CrossFitting?

October 2011

-Main reason for joining CrossFit XLT?

Can get to gym in less than 5 min.

-What did you think after completing your first CrossFit WOD?

My first wod was Helen, I did strict pullups and had never swung a kb before.  I think it took me like 20 minutes and I was the last one done.  The class rallied around me, cheered, and kept me motivated until the end.  My brother in law had drank the kool-aid months earlier and wouldn’t shut up about it, so my wife and I decided to take the leap, start on ramp, and have never looked back.

-How has CrossFit XLT changed your life?

Due to the close proximity this is the first time I have ever been able to wake up and make it to a 5:15am class.

-What results have you seen so far since coming to CrossFit XLT?

My wife and I took a break from the crossfit gyms for about 2 years after the birth of our first daughter.  We still crossfitted out of our garage, but were missing that class and community atmosphere.  Since joining XLT, I have been able to regain and add to my missing conditioning, while also building my strength numbers.

-What is your future CrossFit Goal?

Handstand walks and building my Deadlift numbers

-Favorite movement(s)?

Olympic Lifts and Bar Muscle ups

-Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

*  Just start, Crossfit is infinitely scalable, you will never “Be Ready”.

*  Check your ego at the door or it will end up getting you hurt, somewhere someone smaller than you is warming up with your max.

MARCH-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH—Carol Olejniczak

Carol is such a positive influence in the gym. She goes above and beyond to support her fellow classmates and has grown so much as an athlete in the time she’s been at XLT. We look forward to seeing how much she grows as she continues to crush her goals.

-Tell us a little bit about you!

Hello fit fam, I’m Carol.  I am shocked to be nominated as Athlete of the month.  I’m 57 years old, happily married to Dave for 25 years and we have two great kids.  Elizabeth, (also goes to XLT) is in the Nursing Program through UIC,  and Nate is at Arizona State University  in Civil Engineering.  We have lived in Springfield for 9 years.

-Occupation?

I am a Registered Nurse, from Toledo, Ohio and worked at Toledo Hospital in Oncology, Critical Care, and Family Practice Medicine.  When we made our first family move in 2000 to Gurnee, IL, and I been a stay home mom since (oh darn!!)

-Tell us something we don’t know about you?

I am a 2x cancer survivor.  I knit scarves and donate them to elementary schools.

-How long have you been CrossFitting?

Almost 2 years!!  Who knew?

-Main reason for joining CrossFit XLT?

I said I would TRY one month of Xfit with Kathy Dierkes.  Also, I used to Jazzercise and they closed the business.  I was really looking for a place to exercise again.

-What did you think after completing your first CrossFit WOD?

Day one, we had to run 400M.  I couldn’t make if from the doors to the sidewalk.  Then, we had to jump rope.  I couldn’t do one single jump either.  I was so weak after class that I remember my limbs were shaking.

-How has CrossFit XLT changed your life?

You don’t have enough room to list how my life is different. From mental change like, “I can do this”, to physical changes, like how strong I feel.  Plus, I’m not as jiggly as before.

-What results have you seen so far since coming to CrossFit XLT?

Besides the scale?  Clothes fit better, I feel better, I’m stronger cardio wise, I’m much more toned, and my mind is in a much better place.

-What is your future CrossFit Goal?

I just want to keep being healthy.  I would love to lose more weight, but I like wine too much.

 -Favorite movement(s)?

Anything for my arms, and I am learning to LOVE to jump rope.

-Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

A wise man (named Jon) said to me, “It’s not how much you can lift, but that you keep lifting.”  And Jake says to me on a regular basis, “Remember when you couldn’t even jump rope?  Look how far you have come.”   The trainers are great, everyone in the gym is so supportive, and I feel good to be at XLT!!  I am truly surprised to be nominated.   Thank you.

MEET OUR FEBRUARY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH- FRED CAMPBELL

Fred is as dedicated as they come- very rarely misses a WOD! Hes been killing it the past 5 months with us! Hes the type that never complains about the WOD, he just gets it done! Always can count on him to give it 100%! Glad you are apart of our FITFAM! Keep doing what youre doing Fred!!

-Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Husband to Corrie, I have 3 sons Cody (20), Chase (16), and Holt (6). Chocolate lab Winchester (Winnie). I enjoy doing anything outdoors (boating, hunting, trapping, and fishing). Love being on the water in our boat with family.

 -Occupation?

Caterpillar Field Service Technician for 20 years. Currently Branch Manager for Caterpillar Dealership.

-Tell us something we don’t know about you?

I love cooking on the grill with/for friends & family.

-How long have you been Cross Fitting?

5 Months

-Main reason for joining CrossFit XLT?

I started at XLT only because at work we were starting a weight loss competition for employees, (Biggest Loser), it started September 1st 2017 and ran to Jan 3  2018.  I am very competitive and thought boy if I don’t do this I’m not going to win. I didn’t win but did well.

-What did you think after completing your first CrossFit WOD?

I thought I am never going to make it through this or have a heart attack!

-How has CrossFit XLT changed your life?

XLT has the best coaches, they explain everything to me in great detail when needed, and stick with me until I get a movement down.  I can’t say enough good about the coaches & folks who train there, very friendly inviting atmosphere. It truly feels like a family. I feel guilty when I don’t work out on a Saturday and have to wait 2 full days until the next WOD. I’m the annoying guy at work who wants to talk about it all the time! Some may say I drank the Kool-Aid!

-What results have you seen so far since coming to CrossFit XLT?

Results have been great! I no longer have the Chiropractor on speed dial, my knees don’t hurt, I’m down approximately 35lbs from 1 year ago.  Cardio is greatly improved, running is no longer an issue, and it’s the first time I have seen abs since I was 18. I can confidently compete in a partner WOD now without feeling like I’m holding my partner back or letting them down.

-What is your future CrossFit Goal?

By the end of Summer 2018 I have 3 goals. I want to back squat 250lb X 5, be coordinated enough to complete rope climbs, and do kipping pull ups regularly.

-Favorite movement(s)?

Sit ups, box jumps, and back squats.

-Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

I would first and foremost refer an individual to XLT.  I have a few buddies that are hesitant to the point they will never do CrossFit because they are afraid they will get hurt. The first thing Bryan told me in on-ramp “Don’t try to be HE-MAN” , I took his advice.  Get off the couch to XLT they will work you at a safe pace. If you put your work boots on and get after it you WILL get results!

MEET OUR JANUARY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH! – SARAH BRANER

Sarah ALWAYS comes to class in a good mood! She comes in ready to work and never complains about the workouts. She’s very encouraging to others and loves to work hard. Sarah is a cardio beast and is improving on her strength each day she comes in! We love having her here at XLT! Keep up the great work!!

OCCUPATION?
I’m a nurse (at Memorial and the school nurse at Chatham Elementary).

SOMETHING WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I grew up in Tinley Park, just outside of Chicago and was not athletic growing up. I started running after college and ran my first half marathon in 2013 (hopefully the first of many more).

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CROSSFITTING?
Just about a year.

MAIN REASON FOR JOINING CROSSFIT XLT?
My friend asked if I would do the on ramp with her a year ago. I was curious so I gave it a try and I was hooked!

WHAT DID YOU THINK AFTER COMPLETING YOUR FIRST CROSSFIT WOD?
I was anxious to come back and learn more movements. When I first started to learn to lift, I thought how am I ever going to add weight to this?

HOW HAS CROSSFIT XLT CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Having two babies at home and working full time, CrossFit has given me a place to come and forget about the stress of life. It’s hard taking time away from family each week, but I made a commitment to do something for myself and I love coming to class and feeling challenged. I have gained confidence that was lost after becoming a Mom. I can’t thank CrossFit XLT enough for being a place that I can come and just be myself AND get some exercise for a couple hours a week.

WHAT RESULTS HAVE YOU SEEN SO FAR SINCE JOINING XLT?
Besides gaining muscle I never thought possible, CrossFit has also helped me to work on my running. Being able to run under 8 minute miles is something I never thought I could accomplish!

WHAT IS YOUR FUTURE CROSSFIT GOAL?
I want to work on being able to do strict pull-ups and handstand pushups. I also want to work on adding weight to overhead squats and snatches.

FAVORITE MOVEMENT(S)?
Box jumps and kettlebell swings.

WORDS OF WISDOM FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO CROSSFIT?
I was so nervous to walk in somewhere, not knowing anybody and try something new. I am so glad I did. Everyone I meet at CrossFit XLT is so helpful and encouraging, they truly want to see you succeed and accomplish whatever goal you may have. I feel like CrossFit can be for anyone. If you’re like me a year ago, sitting at home wanting to do something more for yourself, whether it be getting in better shape or just wanting an hour out of the house away from kids, CrossFit can be this for you. I can promise you won’t regret trying this.

Meet Jim Dowson!

Jim just recently hit his one year with us back in May! Totally different guy from when he first walked through our doors, not just physically but his mentality as well. Jim has been “all in” with this new lifestyle change! He is dedicated not only to his WOD schedule, but also has been killing it in the kitchen, making sure his diet has been on point, as you can easily tell from his pictures! Jim doesn’t cherry pick the wods either, even if there is running and lunges, he’ll be there!…unless it interferes with his tee time! Been awesome getting to know you this past year Jim! Keep up the hard work and congrats on being our Athlete of the Month! You definitely deserve it!

I’m Jim Dowson from Auburn.  I just turned 44 years old and am now in the best shape I’ve been in since my 20’s thanks to XLT.

What/who got you to start CrossFit? When did you start?

I was in the worst shape of my life.  I knew if I didn’t change some things I was going to have some real health challenges down the road.  It was a life choice.

Curt Kessler mentioned it to me.  I saw what it did for him and came to check it out for myself.  I started on ramp in May 2016.

What do you love most about CrossFit XLT?

It’s a big family atmosphere.  I’ve always been competitive so this was a great way for me to be able to compete at something that I enjoy.  Everyone is genuinely nice and encouraging which is helpful when you are struggling.
What improvements have you seen since starting?

I’ve lost over 70 lbs in a calendar year.  My strength has improved as well as my range of motion.  Confidence and overall fitness have greatly improved.

It’s a little sobering to look at where I was when I started.

Favorite movement?

Power cleans, deadlifts and backsquats are my favorites.

Least favorite movement?
Lunges and wallballs.

Motivational Quote/ Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

“It is never too late to be what you might have been” George Eliot
If you’re thinking of joining, do it.  You won’t regret it.  You will be sore for a while but it’s so worth it.

Meet Brandi Eaton!

Brandi is one-of-a kind! Easily one of the first words to come to mind to describe her would be selfless. She is always down to give a helping hand, or a word of encouragement to someone who needs it. She is an all around genuine person and a great asset to our box.

Brandi has come such a long way on her fitness journey. She has lost 147 pounds so far, which is no easy task! It has taken her extreme discipline, drive, and dedication to be able to attain this, not to mention the amount of mental toughness it takes to achieve such a feat. She truly is an inspiration and definitely the perfect example of how hard work and consistency has its rewards. Very proud to have you as apart of our fitfam and excited to see you grow as you continue on this journey! Keep killin it!

“I am a 26-year-old from Central Illinois. I started CrossFit as a way to build muscle after I initially lost 130lbs. I started competing after about 3 months, and it ignited a fire. I live for competitions and pushing my body to the max… and then going two steps further.

I also compete in honor of my cousin, SSGT Jordan B. Emrick, who was KIA in 2010. I compete because I am physically able. I compete to show people it is possible to go from being on your death bed at close to 400lbs to being the fittest you have ever been with just a little hard work, sweat, and many tears.”

What/who got you to start CrossFit? When did you start?

My best friend, Anna, was a coach in Indy for a while. She introduced me to it back in early 2015, and I started at XLT in August of 2015.

What do you love most about CrossFit XLT?

I love the community. Our fitfam is one-of-a-kind!

What improvements have you seen since starting?

Physically- my body composition has changed immensely- muscles for the WIN

Mentally – I have become more confident and more social

Favorite movement?

Easily the clean, with back squat a close second!

Least favorite movement?

Burpees and Box Jumps- especially together! It never fails, I always eat the box!

Motivational Quote/ Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

“Its you against you, so make sure at the end of the day you’re a better version than yesterday.”

“As you approach the bar, remember you can control what happens when it leaves the floor. You control whether you miss that weight or make it. Don’t let the bar beat you before you put your hands on it. If you do miss, make sure you miss having put all you have into that lift.”

Meet Bradyn Smith!

Bradyn is fifteen and a freshman at New Berlin high School. He plays football and baseball, and started CrossFit to push himself and take his sports performance to the next level.

Bradyn is without a doubt one of the most dedicated individuals with an outstanding work ethic- just an all around hard working young man. He even got a job to be able to pay his membership so he didn’t have to rely on his mom paying for it. Guarantee not many kids his age would do that.

Bradyn always is at the gym before 6am so he can get a workout in before going to school, and then will be back at night for another wod! Doesn’t matter what the workout is for the day Bradyn is always up for the challenge! Also, shout out to his Mom who drives him back and forth twice a day- four days a week!

Keep up the great work bro! Glad you are apart of our Fitfam! Big things coming for this young man!

What/who got you to start CrossFit? When did you start?

Both my mom and I started around mid November!

What do you love most about CrossFit XLT?

The trainers—they always push and motivate everybody.

What improvements have you seen since starting?

My strength, endurance, speed, and flexibility have all greatly improved.

Favorite part so far at CrossFit XLT?

Getting nominated for Athlete of the Month and pushing my body to the limit each day!

Least favorite movement?

There has been none! It all has been awesome!

Motivational Quote/ Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

“CrossFit will take you on the path to increase your strength and endurance.”

Meet Kathy Dierkes!

Kathy has been a perfect example of what we pride ourselves on here at CrossFit XLT. She has continued to work hard, stay CONSISTENT, and show up day in and day out even when it’s a challenging Wod with alot of burpees! It’s always a pleasure getting to coach Kathy not only because she cares, but she also takes direction and tries her best to apply the advice she receives from us coaches, and that doesn’t go unappreciated. Thank you for the dedication, and we’re very happy to have you as a part of our fitfam! Keep up the great work!

I am 48 and married to Alec.  We have three children- all in college,  Kayla-23, Austin-19 and Adam-18.  I am the CFO at M.J. Kellner Foodservice and am a CPA.   I sit at a desk – Monday –Friday so I definitely needed an exercise routine.   With my kids in college, I thought it was beyond time for me to work on getting healthier.    CrossFit has made it fun to challenge myself both mentally(the struggle is very real some days)  and physically!
What/who got you to start CrossFit?

When did you start?

I started CrossFit in May of this year.  Originally, I planned to only join for a short time just to jump start an exercise program for me.  My daughter wanted to try something different and she was the one that encouraged me to join with her.  I was very hesitant and had a lot of excuses but finally agreed to give it a try!
What do you love most about CrossFit XLT?

The favorite thing for me is working out among people and trainers that are very encouraging.  Everyone motivates you to keep pushing yourself to succeed.  The ability to get a great workout in just an hour session eliminated any excuse for –“I do not have time.”  Also, I love the variety that you find in each workout.  Just when I think we cannot possibly find another muscle to work on- the trainers throw an exercise in that targets it.

What improvements have you seen since starting?

I have lost some weight and gained some muscle.  I still have a long way to go with weight lifting technique but at least I know what I am supposed to do for MOST movements which is an improvement from where I started a few months ago. If the trainers were ever frustrated with my lack of weight lifting knowledge, they never showed it!  I call myself a “project” or “work in progress”.
Favorite movement so far?

Dead lift and anything with the KB
Least favorite movement? Burpees
Motivational Quote/Words of Wisdom for someone wanting to get into CrossFit?

I have had this quote by Gandhi in my office for at least 20 years – “We must become the change that we want to see.”

This has been an addicting exercise and lifestyle change for me the last few months.  CrossFit will definitely motivate you to become a healthier person.

Meet ALEX SIMKO

Alex is a highly motivated individual to say the least. He is not afraid to put in the work, almost always hits 2 a days, and stays humble by working on his weaknesses. So glad you are a part of our Fitfam! Awesome getting to know you over the months you’ve been with us at XLT!! Keep up the work man!!

What got you/made you first start CrossFit?

-I had seen the CrossFit Games on TV and was amazed at the variety of things the athletes were doing. I was not enjoying my current workouts and was looking to try something new and starting CrossFit has turned out to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.
What do you love most about CrossFit?

-There are a lot of things I love about CrossFit but the number one thing is the sense of accomplishment you get after finishing a workout. The community we have at CrossFit XLT is also something I truly appreciate.
What improvements have you seen since starting?

-My form/technique, cardio/endurance, strength, mental toughness and mobility.
Favorite movements?

-Olympic lifts, back squats, overhead squats, front squats, wall balls, box jumps, rowing, running, strict press, push press, bench press.
Least favorite movements?

-Ring dips, double unders, lunges.
Motivational Quote?

-“We don’t deserve anything. Work for it, then no one can say you haven’t earned it.”

-“The difference between the impossible and the possible is in a person’s determination.”

Meet AMBER NOEL!

Congrats to Amber Noel!! Amber is one of our original members and has been with us for awhile, working hard each morning she comes in! Here is some info about this athlete!
I’m a 42 year old mother of 2 daughters, Taylor 18, and Kaitlyn 12. My favorite foods are sushi and cupcakes. I spend most of my time driving around central Illinois, consulting with health care providers and patients about diabetes and Medtronic Minimed’s diabetes technology. The rest of my time is spent tending to my children’s activities, hanging out with friends, reading and sleeping… And let’s be honest… A lot of facebooking.
What got you into CrossFit?

My cousin, Megan, was visiting from Indiana and she kept asking me if there were any nearby “boxes”… I didn’t really answer her because I had no clue what she meant. She found XLT just down the road from my house and persuaded me to go. I stayed in crossfit at XLT because I don’t have to come up with my own exercise plan and I’m not allowed to leave until the WOD is complete without being shamed. Or so I fear. That’s never happened. It’s just how I imagine it.

What do you love most about CrossFit XLT?  XLT has instructors who are real and realistic. They push the athletes to excel, but recognize people also need to push themselves. I travel frequently and I drop in to other boxes across the nation. (To see what WODs they do and collect a t-shirt!) XLT has the largest building space I’ve seen so far. They also put on a good party! I love the loud music at 6am and the cheering for the others in the class and the competition; and I like that we essentially have personal trainers every single class. Ya can’t get that at Snap Fitness! I’ve been able to bring my youngest daughter a few times and I know it’s healthy for her to see me taking care of my health in a fun way. I’m a crossfit mom! Better than being called a soccer mom!

What improvements have you seen since starting?

I’m much stronger, I know that! I can see and feel my biceps and triceps and quads. I can carry all of my own luggage. And carrying groceries and moving furniture has never been easier. Gymnastics focuses on core and I can see improvements in my core as well. I’m also stronger mentally and I find I focus much better during the day when I’m consistent with crossfit. I’ve stopped smoking so I could get more gainz… And I care more about the weight on the bar than on the scale. If I could get a grip on the sweets, I’d be in business.

Biggest accomplishment?

Competing as an athlete. Never in my life have I been identified as an athlete… Always the “smart kid” who ranked in the bottom 20th percentile in PE evals. I’m totally not kidding. I hated PE.

Favorite movements?

Deadlift, hang clean, push jerk,  hollow holds and swings and other gymnastics movements on the bar (and rings) Gymnastics is probably my favorite portion of crossfit in general.

Least favorite movements?

Running. Pull-ups. I’d probably like both of them if I were  any good at them. For now it’s a jogging shuffle and some ring rows.

Motivation for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?

Regardless of your age, gender, BMI, strength… It’s the cost of one person eating out once or twice per week. Less than the cost of one Starbucks latte per day. Scaled to your level. And you get a lot more in return. You can do this. You’re only competing with yourself! We are a family and we are all for each other.

Meet Mark Joe Cascara!

Where to start with Mark?! He is the type of guy who always pushes his limits each and every day he’s in but stays humble when he needs to scale down a workout (or when his wife heather beats him in a wod haha) One of the most genuine guys I know and is always there with a helping hand if need be. Not afraid of a little hard work and is always yelling out motivational quotes during wods lol. So far he is already down 60 pounds since starting his crossfit journey with us! Goes to show that hard work each and every day has it’s rewards. It’s been great getting to know you and your family over the months! Love that you guys are apart of our FitFam!

What made you get into CrossFit?

I was a member at a regular gym. I didn’t push myself and wasn’t seeing results, so I decided to give crossfit a shot.

What do you love most about CrossFit?

The people, the coaches, friendly competition

What improvements have you seen since starting?

I’ve lost 60 pounds and am stronger at 40 then i was at 20!

Motivation for someone thinking about starting CrossFit?

“It does not matter how slow you go as long as you finish!”

Meet AMBER DEVERS!

Amber comes in day in and day out and puts 110% into everything she does! More often than not she comes in early to run and work on skills then stays after to do the same! Her work ethic is exceptional! She is a Staff Sergaent in the U.S. Army National Guard, and just began her Officer Candidate School. Along side that she recently graduated from Nursing School and took a position at Memorial Medical Center. She recently competed in the Festivus Games in April and represented XLT very well! We love having an athlete like Amber here and look forward to coaching and training with her in the future!

Favorite movement so far?
-I don’t have a favorite movement because after every wod I feel very productive afterward.

Least favorite movement?
-My least favorite is gymnastics, not because it’s hard, but because I still have a long way to go.

Motivational Quote?
-“If you’re not scared you’re not taking any chances. If you’re not taking a chance what the hell are you doing anyway.” -How I Met Your Mother
